Victoria and James, the owners of this traditional 19th-century stone-built farmhouse and 35-acre site on the Bedfordshire/Buckinghamshire borders, wanted to extend so they could share their home with family.
The project involved adding extra living accommodation for the couple to free up the original farmhouse and an existing, adjoining barn conversion for their daughter and son-in-law to move into.
Building contractor and installer Nene Valley Homes built a part single, part two-storey addition in keeping with the existing barn conversion. The new accommodation provides a lounge/dining room, kitchen and galleried landing leading to a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a hobby room.
Bedford-based Rationel distributor Excel Facades supplied 30 bespoke, energy-efficient windows and doors from Rationel’s AURAPLUS composite aluminium/timber range. The installation was by Nene Valley Homes.
Choosing windows and doors to unify the property
All Rationel products are made from timber sourced sustainably from FSC®-certified forests. AURAPLUS can be ordered with two different finishes – one inside and one out – to complement a property’s facades and interior decorating schemes.
Victoria and James chose Agate Grey for the aluminium-clad exterior frames and Cream White for the internal timber to complement the property’s oak flooring, skirtings and architraves. The triple-glazed units included side-hung casement windows, guided casements, fixed frames, inline patio doors, external doors and one flush door, all chosen to maximise daylight levels and optimise energy efficiency.
